More birds...

Waves were pretty weak at 58th Street today so snapped a quick shot of the ebb and flow of tide and birds...

For the birds?

I'm not much of a birder, per se, but did get a few passable (well, maybe) shots today out at 54th Street while waiting for the waves to pick it up. There were some dolphins playing and even surfing a bit but water was a bit dark and the one shot that was near me I missed (dolphin too fast!). Maybe this summer.

HB Pier...

One of eight shots that made the cut today from my session up in Huntington Beach. Surf was pretty bad so snapped a few 'lifestyle' shots on the pier... this one caught my eye with the man looking out to see in profile and I liked the texture of the out-of-focus sea in the background. I also liked the contrast between the solidness of the pier structure (concrete) and sharp lines against the sparkley, wavy seascape. The rest of the shots can be seen here.

Waiting... watching...

Waiting for good surf, watching the surf forecast sites, hoping for some waves this weekend. Sometimes it's tough mid-week to get out and snap some shots due to the day job-- but, got to tend the home fires first. With the economy how it is, my job function will become ever more necessary this year to ensure we get plenty of good folks coming into the store and stopping by our website (hitimewine.net).

Hi-Time Wine Cellars, one of the premiere wine shops in the nation, has been in business just over 50 years and has the best selection of wines, spirits, brews and all the goodies that go with them (cigars, gourmet cheeses, chocolates, wine glasses, etc.) in Orange County. I'm the Creative Director there so get to design all the advertisements, edit the newsletter and help decide when and where to market our store. So, if you're of age and interested, please stop by! It's a good place and when surf's up I get to sneak away here and there to snap some shots (my boss' son is an avid surfer... go Kyle!).

But, not too many shots lately so I'm jonesing to get out this weekend and shoot. We'll see how it goes. The above shot is from 54th Street this last summer and can be seen here.

Stormy...

When it rains like it has, and I can't do any surf photography (bad waves, too windy, poor water quality) I try and check out the sunset and once-in-a-while get lucky with ocean pastorals. I had my 40D with me but left my CF card at work so used the G9. Gallery is located here.

Another sunset...

Personally, I never tire of things like sunsets and moonrises. Sunrises I rarely see (though that's changed a bit this last year) as I've typically been an evening person most of my life. I guess I'll have to watch for more moonsets and see if I like those or not. This shot's from one of my galleries on FiatSurf.com.

New point-and-shoot...

So I picked up a Canon G9 not too long ago, just after Christmas. I wanted something a bit smaller than my 40D, a camera I could carry around that was reasonably small yet offered some decent features. On paper, the G9 fit the bill. One of the main features I like is that you can shoot in RAW mode, which captures all the information without assigning a color profile to the image. This way, the photographer can modify the various color paradigms and hopefully come up with something halfway decent. This shot was handheld and I was lucky enough to capture some of the bus in focus while getting a motion blur for the rest of the photo.

ArsLux.net - The Art of Light

Quite a heady title, I know. This blog is an offshoot of my photography website, FiatSurf.com and cousin to my other blog,NaH2O.com. Since my "saltwater" blog is mostly about surf, I wanted another spot to focus a bit more on the other photography stuff I do and/or am interested in. So, while FiatSurf is temporarily down, I'm starting with words and no pictures. But, you have to start somewhere and this is it. If, by chance, you stumble across this site, come back at some point in the future and there will probably be a few more images.

The above image was taken with my 10-22 EFS lens soon after I purchased it. I didn't have a tripod so opted for the foreground in-focus, background out-of-focus. I like how it turned out but will have to repeat with tripod and some different settings.
